The Global Education Initiatives' Bayanihan Internship Program in the Philippines places interns with grassroots NGOs in the city of Manila for 8 weeks. Interns will not only provide sustainable service to the partner’s organizations, but will also partake in Filipino language classes and engage in a range of cultural activities to expand their exposure to their host community. We named the program Bayanihan, as this Filipino word symbolizes the strength and unity of community. Through the Bayanihan Internship Program, interns will not only be able to make an impact in the community of Manila, but will be able to take these experiences back to strengthen their own communities. With these people-to-people connections, we begin to create a greater Global Community.
About De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde
DLS-CSB is a private Catholic college in the Malate district of Manila, Philippines. The college is a member institution of De La Salle Philippines, a network of 16 schools under the De La Salle Brothers Philippine District. Through its Center for Social Action, it advocates for a socially engaged Benildean community guided by the Principles of Lasallian Social Development towards achieving the ideal Lasallian education which is a mission and ministry directed towards integral human development and liberation. The College works in solidarity and collaboration with peoples, institutions and over forty NGOs towards life-affirming actions that respond to various social issues.

The program fee includes expenses for program administration, housing, medical insurance, language instruction, some meals, ground transportation to and from service sites, weekend excursions/cultural visits, volunteer permits, and a cell phone for each intern while they are in their host countries. Airfare, visa expenses and other personal expenses are not included in the cost of the program.
Applicants for the 2017 Internship program must meet the following criteria to participate:
- Must be 18 years old or older at the time of application
- Must be of strong physical and mental health to live in a developing country for 8 weeks
- Possess strong writing and communication skills
- Maintain a commitment to service, cultural sensitivity and GEI’s mission
- Commit to giving at least one community presentation upon returning to the United States
- Meet qualifications specific to the placements desired. See relevant placement page for requirements
Summer interns will stay in apartment-style housing for the duration of the program located close to all internship locations.
Summer Interns will study Filipino each week during their 8 week internship. Lessons are 3 hours per week and often focus on language "survival skills" to help interns achieve their service mission. Previous experience in the local language is not required, although it may be helpful.
GEI provides every intern with travel insurance through Corp Travel. The insurance provides volunteers with basic and emergency medical care for the duration of their service and covers airfare expenses in the event a medical evacuation is necessary.
GEI will work with students and interns who seek independent study or internship credit at their home university or college.
The Sustainable Development Internship Program in the Philippines involves a competitive application process that matches prospective participants to internship placements. Prospective Interns may fill out the application online or may download the PDF version. In addition to the online application prospective interns must turn in a resume, two letters or recommendation and a completed Medical Form.
All required documents are due by April 30th 2017 to Rachel Landale (RachelL@CreativeLearning.org). No late applications will be accepted.
Upon submission of an application, prospective interns will be contacted by a GEI staff member for a brief telephone interview to discuss their service plans and answer any questions about the program. Application accepted into the program will then engage in a teleconference with staff at the organization that they wish to hold their internship with, to determine which placement is right for them.
In the spring, placed interns engage in an orientation process through a series of webinars and teleconferences with GEI staff and country experts to prepare them for service in their host country and arrange an individual work plan to guide their time in the field. Orientation webinars are mandatory for all interns. Creative Learning will not deploy volunteers who do not attend these sessions. If you have a scheduling conflict that cannot be resolved, GEI staff will work with you to review key information. Webinars include the following:
- An introductory session on GEI’s mission, goals and program details
- A session hosted by a country-specific expert to discuss the history, culture and current issues
- A safety and security briefing
- A “professional skills and work-place conduct” session
- A series of optional skills-building webinars on blogging, video and photography, teaching techniques and other professional development or cultural topics.
In addition, accepted applicants conduct a one-on-one session with a member of the GEI staff to craft an individual work plan that charts specific goals and desired outcomes for the twelve-week internship. Those sessions will be scheduled individually.
